AI vs ML vs DL: What’s the difference?

Numerous misconceptions related to the words Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) exist and the vast majority of individuals think that all these technologies are same. Well yes, these are related to each other but not the same at all. Further below is an attempt to explain just that.

  • AI is the act of performing tasks with human intelligence.
  • ML is a way by which AI can be achieved. It requires manual extraction/tagging of huge amounts of data.
  • DL is a type of ML which is able to learn from its own method of computing without any manual effort.

Here is a simple example to explain the concept in further detail:

  • You want an agent to switch on the lights- that’s AI.
  • An example of ML could be that you would need to train the agent so that when someone says “Bring on the lights” or “Turn on the lights”, they are switched on. However, for this to work, you would have to specify each and every combination with which user may ask to get the lights turned on.
  • In case of DL, lights could be turned on even if user says “It’s really dark here.” A deep learning model is able to learn from its own method of computing and recognizes the intent behind the message- if it is trained to do so.
